Electrical PCB designer & tester (Life science instrumentation) – Summer Internship
Chicago,
IL,
United States
Company Description
37degrees, Inc. specializes in innovative cell culture products for life sciences, pharmaceuticals, and fundamental research. Our portable, connected instruments are intelligently designed to support affordable and scalable experiments that advance biological knowledge. By combining cutting-edge technology with deep scientific understanding, we empower researchers to configure novel cell and tissue culture experiments seamlessly — pushing the boundaries of discovery in the life sciences.
The Role
We're hiring a Summer Electrical PCB Designer & Tester Intern to help design, develop, and validate PCBs for our next generation of life science instruments. You'll own real circuit and layout work — not busywork — and ship boards that go into production-grade research products. You'll collaborate closely with our software, mechanical, and fluidic engineers to take designs from schematic through bring-up and validation. This is a hands-on opportunity to apply graduate-level electrical engineering to instruments that scientists actually use at the bench.
What You'll Do
- Design circuit schematics and multi-layer PCB layouts (4–8 layers) for production
- Work across analog, digital, and wireless/RF domains, integrating actuators, sensors, and interfaces
- Select components and define interface strategies for new instrument subsystems
- Perform PCB bring-up, testing, and validation
- Release production files, manage vendor interactions, and maintain EBOM, wiring, and cable documentation
- Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary engineering team to refine designs against project specs and product requirements
- Troubleshoot electronic components and iterate quickly on prototypes
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in Electrical Engineering (or recently graduated)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving instincts; comfortable working independently in a remote environment
Must-Have Skills
- Expert eCAD designer, specifically KiCAD
- Proven track record producing 4–8 layer PCB schematics and layouts at production grade
- Expert in analog/digital circuit design and wireless communication
- Actuator, sensor, and interface selection
- PCB testing and validation
- Production file release and vendor management
- EBOM, wiring, and cable documentation
Strongly Preferred
- Use of AI tools for rapid PCB schematic and layout design
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams (software, mechanical, fluidic engineers)
- Experience with IoT Battery Management Systems (BMS)
- Experience with board compliance (EMI, RoHS, etc.)
Nice to Have
- Embedded system architecture and firmware development (C / C++)
- mCAD familiarity
- Familiarity with life science instrumentation
Logistics
- Summer Internship
- 10–20 hrs/week, flexible
- Remote, US-based
Responsibilities
- Review EE product requirements
- Review EE system architecture
- Design production grade PCBs
- Test and validate PCBs for product integration
- Vendor management / PCB fabrication
Must Have
- Bachelor Degree or Higher
- Passion for EE PCB design to enable new products
- Proven EE skills with complex PCB designs
- Highly creative and strong work ethic
- Experience with working in a multi-functional team
Nice to have
- mCAD familiarity
- Embedded firmware coding
