Summary

Perfusion improves engineered tissues by enhancing nutrient and oxygen delivery. This study introduces a lightweight (<10 lb) portable perfusion system FluidON and CO2 cell culture incubator system CultureON capable of maintaining continuous flow under standard incubation conditions. The device generates physiologically relevant interstitial flow rates and ensures uniform nutrient distribution, as confirmed by computational modeling. When tested with bioengineered tissue patches, the system maintained cell viability, improved spatial organization, strengthened the tissue matrix, and slowed hydrogel degradation. Overall, the system enables mobile perfusion and incubation, offering a promising tool for advancing tissue maturation and bioengineering research.
