Novel portable perfusion system enhances tissue viability for surgical applications

Summary

The primary preservation techniques for transplantable tissues include cold storage (CS) and ex-vivo perfusion (EVP), with EVP demonstrating superior viability outcomes. Portable EVP devices currently exist for kidneys, though larger organs lack comparable portable systems. Scalable, modular perfusion technologies could further enhance pre-implantation tissue viability.

This research evaluates the FluidON — a portable, integrated perfusion prototype designed to maintain tissues under standard incubation conditions using an interchangeable bioreactor.
